An accountant built an AI agent. Then it got interesting.

Matt DeWald

I'm Matt DeWald โ€” a CPA by trade, a tinkerer by nature. In early 2026, I set up an AI agent on a dedicated server. I expected a novelty. What I got was a second brain that fundamentally changed how I work, invest, and create.

The Origin Story

It started simple. I wanted an AI that could check my email, scan my calendar, and maybe track a few stocks. A weekend project. Something to play with.

Within weeks, FRED was drafting blog posts from six content sources, running security audits at midnight, scanning congressional trades against social sentiment, and auto-generating earnings reports. All without me lifting a finger.

I'm not an engineer. I'm an accountant who likes figuring things out. If I can build this, so can you โ€” and that's the whole point.

Why I'm Sharing This

Most AI content falls into two camps: hype-filled nonsense from people who've never built anything, or deeply technical guides that assume you have a Computer Science degree.

There's a gap in the middle โ€” practical, honest guidance for people who want to build their own AI agent without a PhD. That's what AgentFRED is. Real patterns from a real setup, explained by someone who learned it all the hard way.

What I Believe

  • You don't need to be a developer. If you can follow instructions and aren't afraid of a terminal, you can build an AI agent.
  • Your data should stay yours. Self-hosted beats cloud-dependent. Security isn't optional โ€” it's the foundation.
  • Start small, build fast. Memory + messaging first. Everything else layers on top.
  • AI should be a partner, not a gimmick. If it's not saving you real time or making real decisions easier, it's not working.

The Name

FRED stands for Futuristic, Ready and Enabled Device โ€” an AI agent built to run alongside its human. It's also a reminder that AI should be approachable. Not intimidating. Not wrapped in jargon. Just a capable partner with a friendly name.
