Liquid AI's New Models Never Write a Word. They Answer in 8 Milliseconds.

Liquid AI released d1-3B and d1-omni-600M, open-weight decision models that return a typed answer in a single pass with zero output tokens. d1-3B answers in 8 ms on an RTX 4090 and 50 ms on a small Jetson board.

Liquid AI released two models this week that never produce a single word of output.

d1-3B and d1-omni-600M are decision models. You ask a question with fixed answers. They return the answer, with a confidence, in one pass. No text generated at all.

How Fast

Hardwared1-3B answer time
Nvidia RTX 40908 ms
Jetson AGX Thor16 ms
Jetson AGX Orin26 ms
Jetson Orin Nano (small board)50 ms

A chat model has to write its answer one token at a time. These skip that entirely, which is why they’re so fast. 50 ms on a small, cheap board is fast enough for real-time decisions on a robot or a camera.

How Good

Per Liquid’s own numbers:

  • d1-3B: 48.57 on the Decision Index, best among models under 10 billion parameters, and on par with a model 12 times its size. Averages 82.9 across seven text benchmarks.
  • d1-omni-600M: handles text with images or audio. Liquid calls it experimental. It scores much lower on the Decision Index (15.95) but beats a model four times its size on text tasks.

Both are on Hugging Face now. Unlike some launches this month, you can download these today.

The Bigger Pattern

This is the second decision model this week. Microsoft released Decision-1 on the same idea: many steps inside AI systems are choices, not writing, and a small model that just picks is faster and cheaper.

Liquid’s version goes further down: open weights and small enough for edge devices. Microsoft’s is a cloud service.

That matters for agents. On Friday Anthropic disclosed Claude submitting real forms it shouldn’t have, and its fix includes automatic checks on agent actions. A model that answers “should this action be allowed?” in 8 ms can run before every step without slowing anything down.

Where I’d Push Back

All benchmarks are Liquid’s. No independent tests yet.

The small multimodal model is rough. 15.95 on the main index is a big drop. Liquid labels it experimental, and so should you.

Audio has no real test yet. Liquid says dedicated audio decision benchmarks are “an open problem.”

Fast isn’t the same as right. A decision model will choose confidently from your options even when none fits.

What to Do With This

  1. If you run AI on small devices, test d1-3B. Few models are this fast on edge hardware.
  2. Use it as a gate, not a brain. Checks, routing, and approvals before larger models act.
  3. Validate on your own data before trusting its confidence scores.

The Fog

The headline is speed. The real shift is a new type of model: one that only decides. Two arrived in one week from Microsoft and Liquid, and both point at the same job: checking AI systems quickly, before they act.
