Build Your Own AI Agent

An AI agent is software that doesn't just answer questions. It remembers what you've told it, follows rules you set, and does work on your behalf: drafting, researching, organizing and checking.

FRED is the agent Matthew DeWald built on OpenClaw, an open-source platform, without writing code. Every post here comes from that build: what worked, what broke, and what it cost.

New to this? Start with the three guides below, then go by problem: memory, sub-agents, costs or setup order.

Easily Improve AI Accuracy in 2 Minutes

Give your AI the files you want answers drawn from, whether that is PDFs, ebooks, articles, blog posts, or a website you trust, then ask it to answer from them. The analysis gets sharper, every answer points at a page you can open, and the work stays inside sources you trust. Two minutes, no coding, in any AI tool you already pay for. Here are the six steps.

Common questions

Do I need to know how to code to build an AI agent?

No. FRED was built by an accountant using OpenClaw, which you set up with plain-language instructions and configuration rather than programming.

How much does it cost to run a personal AI agent?

Mostly the AI model usage, which runs from a few dollars to a few hundred dollars a month depending on how hard the agent works and which models it uses. Our cost breakdown post shows real numbers.

What should I build first?

Rules and security first, then memory, then research tasks where mistakes stay private, then public-facing work you approve before it goes out.

Want the full playbook in one place? See the AgentFRED books, or book a call to talk through your setup.
